Oxbridge Aspirations
The Portsmouth Grammar School candidates for Oxford and Cambridge have received news from their colleges and we were pleased to hear that six pupils have been offered places. This is an impressive achievement by these pupils in a challenging university environment.
Henry B. to read Medicine - Jesus College, Oxford
Edward H. to read Economics & Management - Balliol College, Oxford
Oliver O. to read Engineering - Brasenose College, Oxford
Madeleine S. to read Veterinary Science - Robinson College, Cambridge
Andrei T. to read Mathematics & Computer Science – Worcester College, Oxford
Hannah W. to read Biology – Brasenose College, Oxford. Alongside the offer of her place to read Biology, Hannah has also been offered a Choral Scholarship at Oxford.
“It has taken a great deal of hard work and commitment by these pupils to achieve their offers, they should be incredibly proud of their achievement for I am certainly proud of them,” says Head of The Portsmouth Grammar School, David Wickes.
This year’s cohort will hope to take up their places later this year, joining 19 other OPs who are currently studying at these two world class universities.
While other universities are still making decisions, and the application process is therefore still ongoing, many pupils have already received offers from other top universities which they have applied to including Imperial College London, Durham, Warwick, and University College London. The courses pupils are applying for show the depth of interest and achievement from our pupils, these include English, Natural Sciences, Economics, Engineering, Biochemistry, Computer Science & Mathematics (combined honours), and Architecture alongside courses such as Mechatronics and Marine Geography.
Applicants for the particularly competitive Medicine and Dentistry courses are currently in the midst of a rigorous round of interviews with a range of universities from the University of Edinburgh and Imperial College London through to Exeter University, Kings College London, and Cardiff University.
The Careers and Universities team are also supporting apprenticeship applications, including in the fields of Law and Management Consultancy, and applications to universities outside the UK, including one to The Netherlands, reflecting the increasingly international perspective of our pupils.
“The academic breadth, application and focus of our Sixth Form pupils is clear in the range of subjects they are looking to study beyond The Portsmouth Grammar School at some of the very best universities in the country,” concludes Mr Wickes. “We will very much continue to support them to achieve these strong aspirations over the coming months.”
