Gala Concert 2025
by Max B, Year 12
After the fantastic Spring Concert earlier this term, I am sure I am not alone in celebrating the storming success of the 2025 Gala Concert. Taking place on Wednesday, guests at the Cathedral were witnesses to an evening of astounding performances and immense student talent.
The night began with the powerful Great Gate of Kiev, performed by PGS Brass. Alongside Mr Brown’s direction, the group continued to impress with classics like Faith by George Michael (featuring an outstanding trumpet solo) and Chariots of Fire.
The Fast Track Band followed, dazzling the audience with music from Pirates of the Caribbean and The Incredibles. The Wind Quintet performed for their final time as a full group, with two year 13s set to leave. Their serenation of Finale (from Wind Quintet in Eb Op. 88 No. 2) was a testament to their hard work and dedication as a group.
The Symphony Orchestra and Middle School Brass showcased extraordinary ability across all year groups, with immense performances of Jupiter (G. Holst) and The Final Countdown.
Guiding us towards the interval, the Concert Band delivered an entertaining set, featuring a Hans Zimmer movie medley alongside selections from Moana and Encanto.
The evening concluded with a mature and talented ensemble of choristers, joined (at times) by the Portsmouth Community Choir. Their performance of Northern Lights and How Lovely Are Thy Dwellings left the crowd in awe as they filed out of the Cathedral.
It is always a privilege to witness the sheer talent and dedication of students at PGS. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening, and I hope many of you feel inspired to attend similar events in the future.
